The Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center (“the Center”) holds a vision to help forward Howard’s mission in society, and also to help build a world where civil rights, human rights, freedom, and equal justice under law flourishes.
The Center’s mission is to serve as Howard University’s flagship institutional setting for the study and practice of civil rights, human rights, and racial justice law and advocacy. We seek to obtain these goals through scholarship, organizing, and advocacy.
What We Need

A dynamic legal professional with a passion and interest in participating in litigation of constitutional magnitude affecting civil and human rights.

A qualified professional with the ability to help devise a legal and political strategy for promoting the Center’s core tenets: seeking liberation from structural racism by applying a human rights framework and centering movements for social change.

Interest in contributing to a substantial project for publication in furtherance of the study and practice of civil rights, human rights, and the law.

Interest in contributing to the development of the Center through programming and participation in on campus intellectual dialogue.
Qualifications
-
Demonstrable litigation experience combined with a substantial ability to collaborate the design of effective strategies for litigation and policy advocacy.

Advanced interpersonal, cooperative, and organizational skills with demonstrated leadership experience

Experience developing relationships with judges, colleagues, clients and their families in order to move
beyond the courtroom to develop lasting systemic change.

Experience leading student teams, research assistance, and ability to thrive in the academic environment.

Respect and admiration for traditions of community organizing and the contributions made to the Black freedom struggle by grassroots engagement.
Requirements

Juris Doctorate (JD) degree;
-
Preference for 3-5 years of litigation experience (civil and human rights work preferred).

Demonstrably strong academic record, and excellent analytical and writing skills.
